Sarah,
Thanks. I've had the same sort of experience. Since the "duh/doh!" moment I've tended to think of Billy as dangerously sane in sorta the Catch-22 sense.

Very well said!

You know, it's only recently (when someone else suggested it) that it even occurred to me that Billy Pilgrim might be insane, that the events of his story might not be true within the world of the novel. As "duh/doh!" as that felt at the time, I think it speaks to your point, which is that Billy's sanity or not isn't the point. What he's been forced to endure is.

I should note that I got my dates wrong for the publication of Vineland which was 1990. That puts it in the same decade as Mason & Dixon in 1997. My point still stands even if my memory doesn't since that's still 7-8 years difference compared to the '63-'66 difference between V. and Lot 49.

/grouchy rant.

Sorry. That isn't as clear as I meant it to be. What I was trying to get across is that history is lacking in science (at least in the way that he is discussing science). There's a great deal of guess work that happens in history (and therefore in lit crit) and no amount of statistics and wishful thinking is going to get rid of that.

[edited because I realized it wasn't clear in the second try either. Now with caffeine!]

Okay I have to admit, I have yet to read the article you've linked to (its 1am here and I need to sleep), but I am curious about your remark that history is lacking in the sciences...
What exactly do you mean? Part of me is quite ruffled that you would think such a thing, so I would like clarification before I puff further. ^_^
